Preparation Strategy

What was your study Plan?

Since the time I started preparing for PG, I had always focused on subject-wise volumes and would make notes of topics I thought were difficult to remember and conceptualize. And I would refer Harrison’s, Robbin’s and Katzung and add up more points to my notes so that I don’t have to bother about going through the whole text again. And I focused more on SARP subjects, Physio, Biochem, Pharmac, Patho, Micro and PSM. Revising the notes again and again and solving as many questions as possible helped.

How many hours did u study ?

10-12 hours a day

Your tips for success ?

Revise things as many times as possible, and solve as many questions as u can.

During your preparation, did you ever doubt your ability to succeed in it?

Yeah, I did. Every once in a while there comes a phase when this happens, but I would just play football or listen to some music or sometimes even find friends to discuss important topics for the exams and try to rejuvenate myself. I feel u just have to somehow get ur stuff together and start studying again with the same concentration.

How much time do you think one requires for serious preparation for this examination ?

It took me 2 years of preparation to get through, and that was not for the lack of hard work, but a lack of approach. But speaking of AIPGMEE very specifically, 7-8 months of hard work with a proper approach is sufficient.

When did you seriously start preparing for this exam?

I had prepared for 7-8 months last year, but I got a rank in seven thousands. Then I again started properly in June 2013, when I had joined ADrPlexus NIMHANS classes, which helped me see things from a different perspective altogether.

Did you face the problem of volatile memory? If so, how did you deal with it?

Yes, for which I would revise my notes over and over again. And Mnemonics helped too.

What was your daily timetable during the preparation? Were you able to stick to the timetable strictly?

No I didn’t have a strict timetable.

What is your advice to the future aspirants?

Hard work, there is no replacement for that. The other important things are approach and luck, but again approach (and even a little, but nonetheless very important amount of luck) comes from hard work.

Which books did you read for the theory part?

Arvind Arora for Physio, Biochem, Ophthal, ENT, SARP, Ortho, Patho and Micro, Mudit Khanna for Medicine, Amit & Ashish for Surgery, Sparsh Gupta for Pharmac, I would read some important topics from Harrisons, Robbins and Katzung too. Sumit Seth for FMT, Sumer Sethi and Arvind Arora for Radiology, Speed material for OBG. Read only some topics in Anatomy from Across.

What was your strategy for the exam day?

Just to sleep well the night before the exam and write the exam with a fresh mind.

What was ur style of answering question. Whether you started from question no 1 and ended with last question or started from middle of the question paper.

I started from the 1st question, but I would solve questions in rounds, 1st being sure-shot questions, 2nd being questions where u had to apply ur brains and 3rd comprising those which were completely unheard of.

Did u underwent the phase of depression. How did u overcome it?

Depression? Maybe… but as I said I would just do something or the other to freshen my mind up. Maybe even watch a movie. Sometimes, when one starts loosing focus and interest in a particular topic or subject, its helps to change the topic altogether. U can always come back to that old topic later and resume from where you left.
